Aston Villa have this morning slapped a £19 million price tage on the head of their star winger Stuart Downing amid reports that Liverpool are perparing a second, improved bid for the England international.
Liverpool have already had one bid of £15 million pounds rejected by Villa however it is understood that if Villa are to lose Downing then they will only do so for what they feel is a reasonable price.
A source close to Villa said: “The club have made it known what they regard as a fair price for Stewart Downing, if he is to be sold.”
Having already lost Ashely Young to Manchester Utd this summer new Villa boss Alex McLeish will not want to lose another key player. However Downing, who has two years to run on his contract, has made it clear to Villa that he will not be signing a new contract at this point in time.
“My agent had a meeting with the club – just one meeting – and he just felt it was the right time not to sign my contract.
“I’ve still got two years to go, so I’ve still got a long time to go, so I just decided to leave it as it is.
“Will I be at Villa next season? I’m not sure.”
