Clare Senior Hurling Manager Ger “The Sparrow” O’ Loughlin has informed the Clare County Board at a meeting late Wednesday evening that he intends to step down as manager of the team with immediate effect.

O’ Loughlin had been considering his future since Clare had ended their campaign with a defeat to near neighbours Galway in Pearse Stadium last Saturday.

Nevertheless, the news will come as a shock to Clare hurling followers who had believed that o’ Loughlin should be given more time at the helm.

Clare had produced an encouraging display against All- Ireland Champions Tipperary before eventually succumbing.

The Clarecastle man was undoubtedly hindered by his teams failure to progress from Division 2 and lost consecutive League 2 finals to Wexford and Limerick respectively during The Sparrow’s time in charge.

Speculation is now likely to mount In Clare as to who the next appointment will be as manager with Under 21 All Ireland winning coach from 2009, John Minogue likely to be a strong favourite for the role.
