Sligo Rovers v Drogheda United, Saturday, 7.45
Sligo Rovers’ win over Shamrock Rovers two weeks ago placed them firmly in the title race and if Friday night’s results go their way Paul Cook’s team could go top.
Sligo have hit their stride in recent weeks with only one loss in ten due not to just to their expansive attacking play but also their solid defence who have kept six clean sheets in a row.
Drogheda have arrested the desperate form that saw them joint with Galway at the bottom for much of the opening half of the season but the Louth outfit are still cannon fodder for the league’s stronger teams.
St. Pat’s, Derry and Bohs have all beaten them comfortably in recent weeks and Sligo will be looking to do much the same.
With Matthew Blinkhorn and Eoin Doyle proving quite a handful up front Drogheda will have a tough time keeping Sligo at bay for 90 minutes.
Speaking ahead of the came the Sligo manager said, “It could be a difficult game because they will get men behind the ball and put pressure on us. We know that we have to do the right things, keep the ball and stay patient and try to work out the result.”
Sligo welcome back the left-sided player Iarfhlaith Davoren so have a fully fit squad for the fixture.
Drogheda also have a full contingent to choose from.
Prediction: Home win, Sligo have dismissed Shamrock Rovers and Bray with ease in recent weeks so Drogheda are unlikely to offer much of a challenge to Paul Cook’s men
