Liverpool’s failure to close out a move for Aston Villa winger Stewart Downing could see Arsenal nip in and seal a deal.

The Anfield club had an offer of 15 million pounds for the England winger turned down last week with Randy Lerner and his team said to be holding out for closer to 20 million.

However according to various reports in England Arsene Wenger is now ready to step in and views the former Middlesbrough midfielder as a suitable replacement for Frenchman Samir Nasri.

Nasri is reported to be on his way to Manchester with both United and City keen on a big money move.

Kenny Dalglish, who has been quietly going about his business this summer, could also be up against Wenger for the signature of Newcastle left back Enrique.

Both teams are keen to strengthen that area of the field and have identified the Spaniard as a solution to their problem.
