Reigning Galway Hurdle winner Overturn will have to defy a rise of a stone in the weights if he is to successfully defend his title as the weights were released today for the two major handicaps, the Guinness Galway Hurdle and the thetote.com Galway Plate.

The Donald McCain trained duel purpose star will have to carry 11-10 if he lines up at Ballybrit in two weeks time. Senior Irish assessor Noel O’Brien has now raised Mc Cain’s charge to a career-high mark here of 159. This high mark means that just 16 of the 40 other entries are currently in the handicap proper.

Bahrain Storm (11-5) and Dirar (10-1) who finished second and third respectively to Overturn last year have been given a fair chance by the handicapper. However connections of Bahrain Storm could be tempted by the featherweight of 9-10 that their horse has been given for the Galway Plate.

Leading the weights in the Galway Plate is the Eddie Harty trained Captain Cee Bee who will carry 11-10 should he take his place in the field. Last years winner FingerOnthePulse has been raised 9 pounds for last years success while Paddy Power Chase winner Majestic Concorde, who was third in the Plate last season will carry 11-0.

The winning owner of last years Plate winner J P McManus is well represented and can choose from the likes of Dancing Tornado (10-7), Head Of The Posse (10-3) and Nicky Henderson’s Aigle D’Or (9-11) backing up Finger Onthe Pulse.

Sportsnewsireland.com will have live score updates on all GAA Championship matches over the summer.
