Sean Thornton, the former Irish U21 player and fans favourite at Sunderland, Doncaster and Leyton Orient , has recently agreed a 3 year contract (subject to visa) with Ukrainian side Metalist Khairkiv who play in the Ukrainian Premier League (Premyer Liha).

Metalist will be well known to Everton supporters after they defeated them in the UEFA Cup in 2007/08

He has been without a club since last August but has kept his hand in by training at former colleague, Dean Smith’s Walsall and had been considering offers from a number of clubs but his desire to remain close to his family, who currently live in the midlands, had been complicating matters.

In the past Thornton has turned down offers from clubs in Scotland, Sweden and most recently Celtic and Melbourne Victory, managed by former team mate Ernie Merrick, in the Australian A League.

However Thornton has now decided that Eastern Europe is the best move for his career at present and links with a Metalist squad made up of players from Brazil, Romania, Columbia and Argentina as well containing 4 players from the Ukraine national side.

Sportsnewsireland.com will have live score updates on all GAA Championship matches over the summer.
