Reports in the Daily Star and the Sun are linking West Bromwich Albion with a £8million swoop for Reading’s Shane Long.

Just weeks after being reportedly put off by the 10 million Reading price tag Roy Hodgson is now poised to make a move that would break WBA’s transfer record.

The in demand Irish international is certain to leave this summer after the Royals lost to Swansea in the Championship play-off final

The Republic of Ireland international, who has one year left on his contract, has now emerged as Baggies boss Hodgson’s No 1 target with the former Fulham manager keen to pair the striker with last season’s 15-goal top scorer Peter Odemwingie

West Brom face competition from Newcastle, Everton and Wolves and should Hodgson succeed in his bid it would mean the club almost doubling the club-record £4.7m they paid Real Mallorca for midfielder Borja Valero in 2008.

Sportsnewsireland.com will have live score updates on all GAA Championship matches over the summer.
