Spanish Giants Villarreal are to play UCD in a glamour friendly this Saturday evening (K.O. 7pm) at the Belfield Bowl.
It represents a major coup for the Students to attract the 4th best team in La Liga last year to Dublin 4 and is sure to evoke memories of previous glamour ties in the club’s history such as the 1996 friendly versus Liverpool and the 1984 Cup Winners Cup Clash against eventual champions Everton.
The Yellow Submarine are packed with international stars and none more so than Spanish World Cup winners Joan Capdevilla, Santi Cazorla and Carlos Marchenna.
European Championship winner Marcos Senna, Italian International striker Giuseppi Rossi and Nilmar are other star names in the Villarreal squad and will be looking to put in a good display against UCD as they seek to fine tune their preparation for the UEFA Champions League qualifiers which are upcoming.
UCD boss Martin Russell is expectant of a quality night of entertainment and said “”It is a wonderful opportunity for our players to go and play against top class opposition. We will use it as an opportunity to show what we can do and hopefully we will attract some new fans who have never seen us play but enjoy our style of football, just because it is Villarreal we will not change the way we encourage our players to play.”
The Students are currently lying in 8th place in the Airtricity league and talents such as Samir Belhout, Graham Rusk and Keeper Ger Barron will all be looking to shine on such a prestigious night.
A big turnout is expected at the UCD Bowl and UCD are encouraging a big turnout by giving away 2,000 free tickets on the Friday before the match.
