Birmingham City, managed by former Irish player and coach Chris Hughton, will travel with a full strength squad including England international goalkeeper Ben Foster, Serb international and former Valencia striker Nikola Zigic, Scottish internationals Barry Ferguson and Chris Burke as well as a home contingent led by club captain Stephen Carr, and including Keith Fahey, Colin Doyle and new signing Adam Rooney.
The club faces a major test this season as it attempts to recover its Premiership status at the first time of asking and to also perform well in the Europa League.
Cork City lies second in the First Division and manager Tommy Dunne sees the match as an ideal way of keeping his side focused ahead of the mid season break. “Birmingham may have been relegated but they still have a Premier League squad and it should be a great game for our young team to play at home in Turner’s Cross. We are all looking forward to it immensely and, if we want Platinum One to stage more games like this in Cork, it is important for the club that we have a good attendance.”
With UCD taking on Villarreal at the same time, Head of Football at Platinum One, Eamon McLoughlin, said “This is a first for us – two games kicking off at the one time in Ireland – and it is also the first time we have staged a match in Cork where sports fans have such great interest in good events. It is our second year working with Villarreal and we are delighted to bring them to UCD which is where Fintan Drury’s and my love of soccer – many years apart – was cemented by the legendary Tony O’Neill. We hope football fans in Cork and Dublin enjoy Saturday evening.”
