Shamrock Rovers v Drogheda preview

Shamrock Rovers will hope to cap a historic week and get their league defence back on track with a win in Hunky Dory Park on Friday evening.

The champions impressed in their win over FC Flora of Tallinn in Tuesday night’s Champions League qualifier but they were slow off the mark against Derry last weekend and paid the price with the few late chances they created being denied by a resolute Derry defence.

Goalkeeper Alan Mannus was at fault for Derry’s goal and this may well be his last match in the League of Ireland as strong rumours are circulating that the Northern Ireland man will join SPL St. Johnstone after next week’s trip to Tallinn.

Michael O’Neill’s men should have no such problems against Drogheda as the Louth side have conceded 44 goals so far in what has been a desperate season for them.

Though they have shown signs of improvement in recent weeks they are still a long way off competing with the top teams in the league.

Last week’s 2-0 defeat to Sligo Rovers was the last in a line of recent results which have seen them go down to St. Pat’s, Bohs and Derry.

Team News
Rovers are still without Karl Sheppard but otherwise have a fully fit squad while Chris Turners sits out the first of his three match ban over the Eamon Zayed incident.
