Limerick defeated Waterford in the third round of the All Ireland Senior Football Qualifiers at the Gaelic Grounds on Saturday night. Despite the poor weather conditions, the two sides played out an entertaining contest and there was little between the teams at various stages of the tie.
Stephen Kelly got the opening score of the game but that was soon cancelled out by Waterford’s Paul Whyte. Gary Hurney then gave the visitors the lead before John Mullane responded for the Treaty men. Kelly and Whyte then swapped scores to make it 0-3 apiece. However, Limerick then took control and scored points from Seamus O’Carroll, Mullane, Jerry Collins and Kelly to move into a four point lead. O’Carroll and Kelly added further scores either side of a Sean Fleming point, leaving the home side five ahead. Patrick Hurney and Paul Whyte had the last scores of the half for the Deise to leave three between the sides at the break.
Waterford came out all fired up after the restart and bagged the first two scores of the second half to leave just the single point between the teams. Stephen Kelly replied for Limerick and hit two points to stretch their lead once more. Gary Hurney was then sent off to leave Waterford with just fourteen men. Jerry Collins, Kelly and John Cooke then pointed to leave Limerick winners by five.
The home side were deserving victors as they rallied well when threatened after the restart and pulled through to claim their place in the fourth round draw.
