Darren Clarke followed up his opening round of 68 with an equally steady 2nd round to move to the top of the leader board in Scotland.
With fellow countrymen Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy treading the path of major victory in the last 12 months, not to mention Padraig Harrington’s success, the chance is now on for Clarke to roll back the years and become part of the golden major winning era of Irish golf.
Despite not finishing in the top 10 in major for over a decade Clarke finds himself top of the pile at Sandwich sharing the lead on 4 under with 2009 US open winner Lucas Glover.
Amateur Tom Lewis who led after the first round slipped five shots off the pace with a 4 over 74 while Thomas Bjorn, who was also 5 under after day 1, dropped two shots in a round of 73 to sit in a tie for third spot.
German Martin Kaymer is very in contention on 3 under as is another major winner Charl Schwartzel who is 2 under.
Rory McIlroy also remains in frame sitting just four shots of the top after another steady if unspectacular round saw him move to level par
However Graeme McDowell and Padraig Harrington will not be around on day three of the Open after both players missed the cut as did world number one and two Luke Donald and Lee Westwood.
