The cream of the English Premier League continued their pre season with some mixed results on Saturday with Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United all in action in various corners of the globe.

New Chelsea manager Andre Villas Boas saw his charges record a 1-0 win over 2008 FA Cup winners Portsmouth. Ex blues defender Tal Ben Haim put through his own net in the 7th minute and that ultimately proved the difference between the sides.

Villas Boas will have been encouraged by a lively display from record signing Fernando Torres who looked confident on the ball at long last in a blue shirt. Other noteworthy displays included newcomers Billy Clifford and Tomas Kalas acquitting themselves well. Nonetheless, Chelsea had to rely on Portugese keeper Hilario to save a penalty from Luke Varney in order to secure victory.

Elsewhere, Tottenham recorded a surprising 1-0 defeat to Kaizer Chiefs in South Africa. Alas, Spurs fielded a shadow side with a numbers of players probably donning the white shirt for the final time. Robbie Keane started the match but is expected to complete a move to WBA or Blackburn in the coming days. Niko Kranjcar, David Bentley, Alan Hutton and Jermaine Jenas were other big names to start but failed to put in big displays to put themselves in the shop window.

Manchester United recorded a 4-1 win over New England Revolution on Friday with Michael Owen showing predatory instincts to put United in the lead early in the second half. Fernando Macheda scored twice on his return from a loan spell at Sampdoria whilst Rafael completed the scoring.

Under fire Arsenal continued their summer of woe as they stuttered to a 1-1 draw against Hangzhou Greentown in China. Carlos Vela scored for the Gunners who had a host big names in action including Robin Van Persie, Andrei Arshavin and Aaron Ramesy. Beleagured Arsenal boss Arsene Wegner will have been hoping for better from his side as he firefights to keep hold of star duo Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas as they both agitate for a move from the North London side.

Finally, Liverpool completed a 6-3 rout of a Malaysian XI with Charlie Adam, Dirk Kuyt, Maxi Rodriquez(2) and David Ngog (2) on target for the English side. Manager Kenny Dalglish was not present as he flew back to England to greet new signing Stuart Downing who completed a big money move from Aston Villa earlier in the week.
