SportsNewsIreland columnist and Pacos de Ferreira striker Padraig Amond could be plying his trade in England’s league one next season with the former Sligo and Shamrock Rovers striker currently on trial at Sheffield Wednesday.

The former Irish under-21 striker joined Portuguese side Pacos de Ferreira last season from Sligo and went onto make 17 league appearances off the bench as the club reached the equivalent of the league cup final only to lose to Benfica.

Carlow man Amond made his first appearance for Gary Megson’s side in a friendly fixture against Rotherham United and appeared to make an impression of the Owls boss

Speaking to the Sheffield Telegraph after the game, the former West Brom manager said: “He only arrived today. We chucked him in and he did well. He ran in behind, stretched the game and gave us a bit more room to play.

The striker also played the first 45 minutes as second string Sheffield Wednesday went down 2-1 to Stocksbridge (tonight).

Sportsnewsireland.com will have live score updates on all GAA Championship matches over the summer.
