An Post Sean Kelly team manager Kurt Bogaerts today announced that Belfast native Connor McConvey has re-signed for the team for the rest of the 2011 season. The young rider had a very successful debut season with the side last year which included taking the U23 title at the Rás and finishing 4th in the overall general classification in the same race.
McConvey then struggled with injury and illness towards the end of the season and felt he needed to take an indefinite break from the sport, which he announced last November.
Bogarts is delighted at McConvey’s return and claims he is itching to get back into action with the side.
“I’m delighted Connor has returned to cycling and I had no hesitation in signing him to the team again. He has serious potential, which he displayed at the Rás last year.”
“He had a good break, which he felt he needed and when I spoke to him it was clear he missed the sport and wanted to return. He is really eager to start racing again but I am not expecting too much from him this year. I am looking beyond that and I’m sure he will be a great signing for the team again” Bogaerts added.
McConvey is pencilled in to make his return at this weekend’s Suir Valley 3 day in Clonmel. He will be joined by teammate Ronan McLaughlin on Saturday’s starting line up.
Elsewhere, the rest of the Irish contingent within the An Post camp are in action on Sunday at the Buggenhout Ospstal Pro Race in Belgium. Mark Cassidy, Sam Bennett, Philip Lavery will be joined Kevin Claeys, Dries Hollanders and Maxim Debusschere in a six man squad.
