Glasgow Rangers will drop into the Europa League play-offs after they lost to Malmo in their Champions League third round qualifying tie, 2-1 on aggregrate.

Trailing 1-0 from the first leg at Ibrox last week, Rangers needed a goal to drag themselves back into the game and it duly arrived courtesy of Nikica Jelavic 23rd minute strike.

At that point Ally McCoist ‘side were down to 10 men after the sending of Steven Whittaker for throwing the ball at Wilton Figueiredo after the referee had given a free kick to the home side.

However despite the sending off Ranger’s rallied with Jelavic scoring with a volley just 5 minutes later following a cross from Maurice Edu.

Malmo almost equalised before half time, Allan McGregor with a smart save from Jimmy Durmaz.

If beating their Swedish hosts with 10 men was proving difficult the job got harder on 66 minutes with Madjid Bougherra was shown a straight red for a foul on Dardan Rexhepi.

The numerical disadvantage was halved 6 minutes as Ricardinho picked up a second yellow to join the Ibrox duo in the locker room however Malmo the sending off rallied them for a late flurry with Figueiredo and Pontus Jansson going close.

In the end however Rangers couldn’t hold on and Jiloan Hamed scored a curling effort with ten minutes to go to bring the sides level on the night and into the next round of the play off’s.
