It’s all change at the top of the Airtricity league of Ireland tonight with leaders Sligo Rovers, not in action till Sunday, slipping to third as Derry and Shamrock Rovers both claimed impressive wins.
Stephen Kenny’s Derry moved top of the table as they beat a poor Galway side at Terryland Park, goals from Eamon Zayed (2) and Patrick McEleney sealing the win.
Galway were on the back foot from the offset with Stephen McLaughlin going close with a header inside the opening 2 minutes however Derry didn’t have to wait long to open the scoring with Eamon Zayed netting a penalty on 11 minutes after Kevin Deery had been fouled.
Derry went into break two nil up when Zayed took his tally for the season to 19 heading home McEleney’s cross.
Zayed then turned provider with 15 minutes to go with the former Bray striker rolling the ball for McEleney to finish.
Meanwhile at Dalymount Park, Shamrock Rovers got over their Champions League heart break thanks to a narrow win over Bohemians.
Gary Twigg’s 66th minute header sealed a hard fought 1-0 win that moves the defending champions up to second in the table level on points with Derry and with a game in hand.
Finally Drogheda moved to within a point of third from bottom UCD as goals from Dinny Corcoran and Philip Hand sealed a win over Bray,
The result means Drogheda head home having won back-to-back Premier league games for the first time this season.
Meanwhile Bray’s poor home form continues with Pat Devlin’s side failing to win at the Carlisle grounds since they beat Shamrock Rovers in May.
