Aileen Morrison, Ireland’s best hope for a Triathlon medal in London 2012 finished in a respectable 18th position from 65 starters in Saturday’s Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series London event, presented by Tata Steel, and held over the London 2012 Olympic Games course in Hyde Park.
The event was won by GB Olympic Games hope, Helen Jenkins, the 27 years old from Bridgend in South Wales. Jenkins won emphatically in front of a wildly enthusiastic home crowd and is now the favourite to secure the Team GB nomination for the London Games. She swam and cycled a tactical race around the scenic tourist route course which passes through Buckingham Palace, The Mall, Hyde Park Corner and right through the centre of the Wellington Arch.
For Morrison it was another fine learning experience. Following the one lap swimming event in the Serpentine, Hyde Park, she was tucked in behind the leading pack in 34th place. In the running section, Morrison ran well, moving up steadily from 25th to 18th at the finish.
Winner Helen Jenkins, who broke away from one of the best triathlon fields ever assembled, had this to say later: “It is really special to me, with two podiums here in the last two years. It’s special because it’s the Olympic course, but the crowd support is amazing. I hope everyone enjoyed watching, the support was fantastic, so thank you”.
