Wigan midfielder James McCarthy will miss Ireland’s friendly with Croatia on Wednesday.
The young midfielder suffered an ankle injury in Wigan’s 1-0 win over Villareal and will be assessed by the Wigan medical staff to determine the extent of the injury.
Both Roberto Martinez and Giovanni Trapattoni will be sweating on the outcome of those tests with important games looming for both club and country.
McCarthy caused consternation within the Irish management set up when he missed the end of season carling cup fixtures as well as the Euro 2012 qualifier with Macedonia and earlier this week assured the Italian that he would be over for the Croatia match, however that now won’t be the case.
Aston Villa utility defender Ciaran Clark has now been called in after Damien Delaney suffered an ankle injury playing for Ipswich yesterday while Stoke duo Marc Wilson Jon Walters are both injury doubts and will be assessed by the Irish medical staff.
Seaumus Coleman and Keith Fahey have also been ruled out.
Sportsnewsireland.com will have live score updates on all GAA Championship matches over the summer.
