Kenny Dalglish is planning a double swoop for defensive duo Ryan Shawcross and Gary Cahill as he puts the finishing touches to his Liverpool side for the new season.

Stoke City’s Shawcross is Dalglish’s number one target and the club are understood to be preparing a £10million bid, according to reports in the Metro. Cahill, who has also been an Arsenal target is available for £17 million and is also of interest to the Reds. While Liverpool are unlikely to pay that price they are preparing a cash plus player swop deal.

The Merseyside club conceded 15 goals in six friendlies and Dalglish is well aware that he needs to tighten up his defence if the side are to challenge on any front this season.

Ryan Shawcross is a quality defender who is now in his fifth season at Stoke City and may feel he has achieved as much as he can at the club. A move to a bigger club could help his chances of making the England national team. Gary Cahill is in much the same position is would most likely jump at the chance to join Liverpool.
