Liverpool look set to drop their interest in Ryan Shawcross and Gary Cahill and instead will make a shock move for Chelsea centre-back Alex.

According to Fanatix.com, Liverpool have already held unofficial talks with Chelsea over a proposed £12m move for Alex and the feedback has been positive with Chelsea seemingly willing to do business.

The Brazilian is no longer a regular in the Chelsea line up following the arrival of David Luiz from Benfica last January and has also been linked with Juventus.

The centre of defence has emerged as a key position that requires strengthening in recent weeks especially with Martin Skertel injured at the moment and Daniel Agger prone to injury. Liverpool looked vulnerable during pre season conceding 15 goals in their 6 games prior to the start of the league.

The 6 million capture of Newcastle full-back Jose Enrique was thoughts be the Merseyside club’s final transfer of the summer however Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group are look set to back Kenny Dalglish for one last foray into the transfer market.
