Chelsea have had a reported bid of £22 million for Juan Mata rejected by Spanish side Valencia. The Daily Mail claim that the Stamford Bridge club offered £18m up front, plus a further £4m to follow for the winger, who is also being courted by both Arsenal and Tottenham.

Mata has a £22m release clause in his contract and it appears that Chelsea are willing to pay that figure in order to capture the Spanish international despite the buy-out clause expiring at the end of July.

Arsenal may yet make a counter bid however, as after Cesc Fabregas’ departure and with Samir Nasri’s proposed move to Manchester City they appear to have plenty of cash.

Chelsea are believed to have offered Mata a wage increase and the promise of a key position in their starting eleven as incentives.

Mata won a World Cup winners medal with Spain and also impressed many in last season’s Champions League in games against Manchester United and Rangers.
