Liverpool ease through to 3rd Round
Liverpool showed their trophy intent with a comfortable and professional victory at St James Park on Wednesday evening. Kenny Dalglish picked a strong side in order to avoid a cup embarrassment like past seasons when the Reds have been knocked out by clubs such as Reading and Northampton.
A packed house at the home of Exeter City began the night in hopeful fashion but when the teams were announced they must have realised the task that their side faced. Reina, Skrtel, Henderson, Adam, Maxi, Meireles and Suarez all starting as Liverpool in that moment showed their intent this season and perhaps the strength in depth that King Kenny has this season at Anfield.
Liverpool lost Raul Meireles to a suspected dislocated shoulder after just twenty minutes but soon after took control of the tie after the Exeter defence failed to deal with a Henderson cross and there was Suarez to slot home. The Premier League side went on to show their superiority and doubled their lead just after the break through Maxi Rodriguez, which killed the game off. Suarez was once again involved as he continues to excite ‘Pool fans with some excellent performances. It was 3-0 minutes later, Andy Carroll, who had replaced the injured Meireles. The former Newcastle striker, who used to ply his trade at a St James Park, slammed home a half volley from the edge of the area.
Dalglish then used the remainder of the game to give his younger players a go and they duly obliged, controlling the last half an hour of the game. Despite Liverpool’s dominance, The home fans were rewarded with something to cheer as former Man United striker Danny Nardiello pulled a goal back with a penalty. It was just a consolation for the home side and the Reds saw the rest of the game out.
Final score at St James Park, Exeter City 1-3 Liverpool and the Reds progress to the 3rd round of the Carling Cup.
