Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh confirmed last night that he will not be a candidate in the forthcoming Presidential election, thus ending a week of “will he , won’t he” speculation.

In a statement, Mr Ó Muircheartaigh said: “I do not intend to contest the forthcoming election.” He added that he was “honoured and humbled that so many people from all sections of society should have contacted me offering support and assistance” and he wanted to thank them “for their kind offers”.

He concluded by saying that he believed that it is in the best interests of the country to have a president as part of the constitutional system and he wished every success to all candidates.
