Inverness Caledonian Thistle V Kilmarnock

Things are going from bad to worse for Terry Butcher’s side at the minute. Their league cup tie against first division Ayr United on Wednesday evening provided Caley with a much needed opportunity to record their first competitive win of the season, having lost four and drew one of their opening league fixtures. Inverness lost the tie 1-0 to pile further pressure on their manager, but Butcher remains upbeat, believing that the tide will eventually turn,

‘We’re bottom of the league, but the only way is up for us and we’re expecting a lot of goals and a lot of points once we get everybody back. We’ll be fine.’

Kilmarnock have confirmed that defender Ryan O’Leary will be out for up to seven months following cruciate knee ligament damage, sustained in last weeks draw against Hearts.

Devastated O’Leary, who had two operations on his left shoulder which kept him out for seven months two years ago, is preparing himself for further surgery,

‘It isn’t great, I am gutted. I had a scan on Sunday and I knew what was coming but when you actually hear it, it is a real blow. It happened at a corner. There was a tangle of legs, then my knee went the wrong way and I felt it jar. The feeling was weird. There was initial pain but I had more of a fright than anything but there was no way I could get up and walk off. I needed a stretcher and then went straight to hospital after the game.

It’s a complete snap, I’ve seen the images. There is other ligament damage but it’s minor. You hear how an injury like that is a player’s worst nightmare but you never think it will happen to you.’

Kilmarnock hasn’t lost a match all season and could go fourth in the table with a win.

Manager Kenny Shiels was optimistic ahead of the game that his side can build on their decent start “what we had coming in on 15 June, we were building a new squad and a new side and in the process of doing that we have raised expectations and been undefeated in four games. I feel that we’re still in a building process and we can look to build on today’s (Hearts) performance.”

Prediction: Away win.
