Alan Pardew seems to be a busy man at the minute. He is trying frantically to strengthen Newcastle’s squad before Wednesday’s deadline. With the departures of Jose Enrique, Kevin Nolan and Andy Carroll in recent times, the Toon have plenty of money available and also have gaps to fill in their bare squad.

Since Enrique’s departure to Liverpool, Pardew has been chasing PSV left back Eric Pieters. The 23 year old would be a like for like replacement and has confirmed that he has played his last game for the Dutch club indicating he is on the verge of a move to St.James Park. Reports suggest he is due at the club today to agree terms and complete a medical ahead of a move.

If Pardew fails to secure the capture of Pieters then he has drawn up a shortlist of potential buys. West Brom’s Nickey Shorey was mentioned as was former Liverpool target Aly Cissoko from Lyon.

Meanwhile Wigan have told Newcastle that their pursuit of striker Hugo Rodallega has come too late and no deal will be done.

The Magpies really need a new striker to partner Demba Ba up front. They need to score more goals and without Carroll, they struggled to find the net in the latter stages of last season. With the Rodallega transfer now impossible it seems, Newcastle are reportedly looking at Sochaux striker Modibo Maiga. The highly rated striker is worth around £7 million and he has publicly stated that he wants to join Newcastle.
