Russia goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev will miss the Euro 2012 qualifiers against Macedonia and Republic of Ireland after injuring his knee during a Russian Premier League game on Sunday.

The CSKA Moscow keeper collided with Spartak Moscow striker Welliton forcing him off in the 29th minute. Akinfeev immediately asked to be replaced and the exact diagnosis is yet to be made but according to CSKA head coach Leonid Slutsky he could be out for up to 6 months. Therefore Russia’s number one will miss this week’s crucial Euro 2012 qualifiers and the rest of the Russian season.

Dynamo Moscow goalkeeper Anton Shunin has already called into the Russia squad instead of Akinfeev.
