St Brigids V Strokestown,Roscommon Senior Football Championship, 6pm Saturday.
The reigning champions in the Roscommon senior football championship, St Brigids lay their title on the line this Saturday evening when they take on Strokestown in the quarter-final. There is no doubt that St Brigids come into this game as strong favourites buts Strokestown are sure to put up one hell of a battle.
Strokestown scraped into this stage of the championship when they overcame St Faithleach’s by a single point in an 8th place play-off a couple of weeks ago. Before that, they just managed to scrape out of their group when they beat Clann Na Gael, drew with Castlerea and lost to Kilbride. Once again, the scoring onus will fall on the shoulders of Under 21 star, Colin Compton who has been in fine form this year.
Of course, not only are St Brigids the county champions, but they are also the Connacht champions and very nearly went all the way last year, eventually losing the All-Ireland final to Crossmaglen Rangers by three points. They wasted no energy in galloping through the group stage of the championship enjoying easy enough wins over St Aidans, Western Gaels and Roscommon Gaels. Once again, the side will be littered with county players such as Karl Mannion, Peter Domican and ace forward Senan Kilbride while the evergreen, Frankie Dolan still remains a threat. To be honest, it is hard to see the holders losing this one.
