Irish jockey Tom Ryan has won the Australian Grand National on 50/1 outsider Man Of Class. The famous steeplechase which took place at Sandown was the riders first success since moving to Australia.

Ryan, 27, travelled to Australia with the Irish jump team in 2005, and returned to Melbourne in January to restart his career in the saddle after injury had halted his progress at home.

“Winning a A$200,000 race isn’t bad,” Ryan said. That purse equates to about £130,000 at current exchange rates.

Ryan, who had been based with Michael O’Brien in Ireland for most of his career, says that Sunday’s win as one of his biggest in ten years as a jockey.

“I rode a winner at Cheltenham and this not far off it,” he said. “An Australian National – you don’t get much better than that.”

“I’ve had a lot of injuries and it went a bit quiet at home so that is why I decided to come over here”.
