Hopes that full back Kevin Kilbane will be able to make the starting eleven against Slovakia will become clearer in the morning as the back strain that he picked up will be monitored overnight.
The 34 year old has been a major doubt for the two must wins games that Ireland have, starting with Slovakia at home on Friday and Russia away next Tuesday.
An FAI statement on his injury condition read “Further to this afternoon’s training session, Kevin Kilbane’s back strain will continue to be monitored overnight. An update on his fitness will be given tomorrow”.
If Kilbane doesn’t make it Stephen Ward is expected to slot in at left full back as replacement for the Everton defender and Marco Tardelli feels that Ward can handle the step up “Stephen Ward now is a strong player. He’s young and he runs for the whole match. He’s very good with his head. Now, he’s ready to play an important match.
