Sharapova crashes out of U.S Open

Former U.S Open champion and third seed Maria Sharapova was dumped of the grand slam yesterday by Italian Flavia Pennetta in a 6-3 3-6 6-3 third round loss.

Sharapova’s troublesome serve played a large part in her undoing and Pennetta, who has twice reached the quarter finals at Flushing Meadows, took the initiative to advance to the next round.

Sharapova had won all 12 of three three-setters played this year but she finished yesterday’s match with a a total of 60 unforced errors and spoke of a lack of confidence in her performance after the loss.

“I didn’t feel comfortable with most of my game today”, she said.
