Following the news that Jack Wilshere will be out for a further two months, Arsenal have been hit by the news that defender Thomas Vermaelen will be out for the same period after undergoing Achilles surgery.
The Belgian centre half suffered the injury during Arsenal’s Champions League qualifier against Udinese. The news comes after he missed most of last season through injury but Arsenal are yet to confirm the period of time he will be out, the player’s father has confirmed his son went under the knife in Stockholm and will be out for around 6 weeks. Vermaelen pulled out of Belgium’s squad and was sent to Sweden by Arsenal to rest and see a specialist but after being consulted the defender had surgery on his troublesome ankle.
He missed the Gunners’ 8-2 defeat at Old Trafford and according to reports; Arsene Wenger had severe doubts over the player’s ability to stay fit at the start of the season. Per Mertesacker will now fill in for him but Wenger was hopeful of pairing the duo at the heart of Arsenal’s defence together.
The Gunners host Swansea this Saturday and it’s a game they really need to win following two successive league defeats.
The defender joins Wilshere, Squallici, Diaby and Gibbs on the Arsenal treatment table.
