Liverpool makes the trip to London to face fellow Champions league hopeful’s Spurs looking to bounce back from their 1-0 defeat at the hands of Stoke last weekend. The Anfield outfit dominated the Potters creating a number of goal scoring chance only to find Asmir Begovic in stunning form and this weekend they will find themselves up against another top keeper in the shape of American Brad Friedel.
After conceding 8 goals in his opening two games for Spurs, Friedel could have been forgiven for questioning his move to London however the veteran keeper along with the rest of his team mates turned a corner last weekend when he kept a clean sheet as Spurs beat a previously unbeaten Wolves 2-0 at Molineux.
Scott Parker made his debut last weekend against Mick McCarthy’s side and turned in a strong performance however he will face a sterner test on Sunday against Charlie Adam, the Scot Harry Redknapp tried to sign last January. Adam has settled well into life at Anfield and despite it being early days the Scot is justifying the chase for his signature.
Spurs won out last season, claiming the double over the Red, a 2-1 win at home followed by a 2-0 end of season win at Anfield. However this time round Liverpool are the form team having made the better start to the season, although the fact that Spurs defeat’s have come against the Manchester duo of City and United belies their current position.
Redknapp will revert to a strong starting eleven after resting a number of players for the 0-0 draw with PAOK on Thursday. Rafael van der Vaart (hamstring), Aaron Lennon (groin) and William Gallas (calf) continue their recovery from injury and could play some part in the game at White Hart Lane after being included in the match day squad.
Likewise Steven Pienaar, Tom Huddlestone and Ledley King all face fitness tests and again could feature however Michael Dawson is definitely out as is Sandro who is fit again after a knee injury but won’t be risked.
Kenny Dalglish meanwhile will be without Glenn Johnson as his injury start to the season continues, the former West Ham right back suffered a recurrence of a hamstring injury last weekend and his place could go to Martin Kelly who is back after a similar injury.
Steven Gerrard is also nearing full fitness and despite initially targeting this game for his comeback the 31 year old may not risked by the Scot after six months out with a groin injury.
Match day squads:
Tottenham (from): Gomes, Friedel, Cudicini, Bale, Kaboul, Bassong, Gallas, Corluka, Walker, King, Assou-Ekotto, Parker, Huddlestone, Lennon, Modric, Kranjcar, Livermore, Townsend, Lennon, Pienaar, Pavlyuchenko, Defoe, Dos Santos, Adebayor, Van der Vaart.
Liverpool (from): Reina, Skrtel, Carragher, Agger, Enrique, Adam, Lucas, Henderson, Kuyt, Downing, Suarez, Doni, Flanagan, Coates, Spearing, Shelvey, Rodriguez, Carroll, Bellamy, Kelly, Robinson.
Prediction: Spurs have the recent edge in this fixture winning the last five games but Liverpool will be keen to show that last weekend was a once off. A draw appears to be safest bet in this one.
