A hat trick from Sean Houston helped Bray Wanderers to a comfortable 4-0 victory over UCD in the Airtricity League at the Carlisle Grounds on Wednesday evening. The former Student scored the perfect hat trick as Jake Kelly also chipped in to confirm a comprehensive victory.
The Students never got into the game as the home side dominated proceedings. They converted their possession into a crucial opening goal inside ten minutes. Chris Shields played Jake Kelly down the left before the Bray winger pulled back for Houston to smash into the roof of the net. Martin Russell’s side have been in decent form of late and such form has meant they will play Premier Division football again next season.
After a sluggish start, UCD began to find their feat and Stephen Doyle was denied by a superb save from Darren Quigley while Graham Rusk volleyed just wide of Bray’s goal. The home side had the better of the first half and only some fine defending from Leahy and O’Connor denied the Seagulls a second goal.
They did double their lead though just after the break when skipper Gary Dempsey whipped in a corner and Houston glanced it in to make it 2-0. It was a hammer blow for UCD but despite being two goals down, the Students have fought back on many occasions this season so they weren’t too disheartened. Any hopes of a fight back were all but extinguished just before the hour mark. It was the same combination as for the 2nd goal as Dempsey played in Houston who superbly finished past Ger Barron.
Not only was it a hat trick for the versatile player but a perfect one as well, coming against his former club. UCD never gave up and continued to threaten but it was Bray who scored the fourth of the game. Substitute John Mulroy linked with Zamba before setting up the impressive Jake Kelly to slot home.
One negative for Bray was the injury to captain Gary Dempsey. The influential midfielder clashed with Robbie Creevy and was replaced. The win for Bray means they now draw level with Dundalk while the gap between the Seagulls and UCD widens further.
Final score at the Carlisle Grounds, Bray Wanderers 4-0 UCD
