Ireland got off to a winning start in the 37th World Boxing Championships in Baku when Belfast flyweight Michael defeated Moldova’s European Bronze medallist Alexandr Riscan by a convincing 25-12 margin.

This was an excellent performance from the 19 years old St John Bosco clubman who in the process has earned himself a place in the next round (last 32) against Olzhas Sattibayev of Kazakhstan .

Conlon had in fact been ‘sparring’ with Riscan as late as last week at the training camp in Germany attended by several international squads including Ireland.

Today Conlon was well on top throughout winning Round 1 9:4 , Round 2 8:4 , and Round 3 8:4

Should Conlon reach the quarter finals, he like those in other weight divisions will automatically qualify for a place in the 2012 Olympic Games in London . For any who do not make the quarter final stages there will be another opportunity in 2012.
