Wexford Senior Football Championship Semi-Finals
Horeswood v Fethard
Over the last few years, Horeswood have been one of the leading clubs in Wexford winning the county championship in 2005, 2006 and 2009.
Over that time, they have also supplied many players to the much-improved Wexford senior football team including Leigh O’Brien, Tomás Howlin, Ciaran Deely and of course star forward, PJ Banville.
Before Horeswood came on the scene, Fethard remained one of the premier team within the county with their one and only title of 1998 being a scant reward for their competitiveness at the time. However, they remain a contender for the title and their never-say-die attitude will make it very difficult for Horeswood this weekend.
So far this year, Horeswood have been in superb form with a defeat to Castletown being the only blip on their record. The return of Banville from Australia has been a major boost and he has been the key player in the march to this semi-final. They have garnered wins over Clongeen, Adamstown, Starlights and St Annes with the highlight being Banville’s 7 points from play in a 1-16 to 3-9 win over Starlights.
Over the last few years, Fethard have struggled to make an impact in the Wexford senior football championship but they really made people stand up and take notice when they beat Gusserane by 0-10 to 1-6 in the quarter-final. In that game, Fethard displayed all of their battling qualities having trailed by a point and facing into a strong wind in the second half.
However, inspired by Daniel Mullins, Fethard fought back to eke out a famous victory.
There is no doubt that Fethard will give their all on Sunday but Banville may turn out to be the difference between the sides.
