Arsene Wenger may bolster his faltering defence with a £6m bid for Barcelona’s out of favour left back Maxwell in January after the Catalan club suggested they would be open to offers for the Brazilian defender.
The 30 year old signed from Inter Milan on a five year deal in 2009 and has lined out for the European Champions on 53 occasions but has fallen behind French left back Eric Abidal and fellow Brazilian Adriano in manager Pep Guardiola’s plans.
Wenger’s current first choice left back Kieron Gibbs has yet to convince as a replacement Gael Clichy and Maxwell could well provide a stop gap as well as mentor to the young Englishman.
With Bacary Sagna breaking his leg in Sunday’s defeat to Spurs Wenger is desperately short of defenders as Thomas Vermaelen, Laurent Koscielny, Johan Djourou and Sébastien Squillaci are all currently sidelined or returning from injury.
Wenger has shown a desire to buy in some experience to his squad since the departure of Clichy, Samir Nasir and Cesc Fabregas this summer with deadline day swoops for Per Mertesacker, Mikel Arteta and Yossi Benayoun.
