The battle of the top of the Airtricity league of Ireland took another turn today when a double from Karl Sheppard sent Shamrock Rovers back to the top of the table.
With Sligo Rovers going down to St Patricks Athletic on Saturday evening the Hoops knew that a win would take them back to the summit and they signalled their intent when they took the lead on 7 minutes through former Everton trainee Sheppard, the striker reacting the quickest to head the ball home after Darren Quigley have tipped Chris Turner’s header on to the crossbar.
However Bray Wanderers have proved to be a thorn in Shamrock Rovers side this season and when Gary Dempsey equalised from a free kick in the 64th minute Michael O’Neill could have been forgiven for thinking it was going to be another bad day at the office.
However with a minute left in normal time up popped Sheppard to score his second of the day and snatch the three points at the end.
Sheppard, was came back into the side in place of Gary O’Neill, started the move that lead to the winner when he won possession before racing into the box to head home Ciaran Kilduff’s cross and send the away support into raptures.
Sunday’s win moves the Hoops a point above Sligo Rovers with a game in hand ahead of this Thursday’s home clash with Derry City.
