Derry triathlete Aileen Morrison secured her place at next year’s London Olympics with a silver medal finish at the Tongyeong ITU World Cup in Korea.
The podium placing means that with her fourth place finish at last weekend’s Huatulco ITU World Cup in Mexico she can not be passed out in the rankings for the Olympics.
“It was hard to back up 2 races in 6 days in different continents, but I worked hard on the bike and Jess just had that bit extra on the run today” the Lisburn native said after the race.
Morrison has had a mixed season but turned it around four weeks ago at the Yokoahama leg of the World Championship and she lead for stages of today’s event before being passed by Jessica Harrison of France.
“I didn’t expect Jess to run so fast but she put on a solid run there and I couldn’t stay with her. But I’m delighted with second,” Morrison said of the last race of the season.
The London 2012 start list is not finalised until next June so Morrison will begin her winter training season with the opportunity to continue her climb up the rankings and guarantee a comfortable start place at Hyde Park next summer.
