Anthony Tohill will have a number of headaches to contend with after it emerged that captain Stephen Cluxton, Colm Begley and Darran O’Sullivan won’t be on the plane to Australia when the Irish International Rules squad departs next Saturday morning.
Cluxton and Begley will have to remain behind as their club side Parnells’ 1-18 to 2-9 extra-time victory over St. Sylvester’s in round four of the Dublin SFC last Saturday has earned them a quarter-final clash with Ballymun Kickhams next Saturday afternoon.
Beagly admitted that the pair will have some decisions to make should Parnells get past Kickhams next Saturday. “We have a bit of thinking to do,” Begley said.
“I think we can play one more game and if needs be, we can fly out after that. We’ll play the game and go from there. I’d be delighted to go over there, but if Parnells are in the championship I’ll stay. Club commitments are the main thing.
“It’s a bit harder for Stephen. He’s very dedicated to his club. He’s captain and that’s a real honour. I won’t say will he or won’t he, but he’s very dedicated to his club.”
Darren O’Sullivan, meanwhile will miss out after his side Mid-Kerry are through to a Kerry SFC final against Dr Crokes on October 30. O’Sullivan said “I would have loved to go to Australia and play for Ireland,” he said.
“I have enjoyed the training with the lads and learning all about a new game. I haven’t given up hope just yet but we have to wait and see. I am in a county final and I am not going to leave the Mid Kerry lads, as much as I would love the experience of going over and playing with the Irish team.”best that I can.”
