French captain Thierry Dusautoir has been named the International Rugby Board player of the year at an awards ceremony in Auckland.

It will serve as some consolation for the 29-year-old flanker, after his men lost out 8-7 to New Zealand in Sunday’s World Cup final at Eden Park.

New Zealand player Richie McCaw won the award for the past two years, but this year has to make do with sharing the best team title with his All Black colleagues. Graham Henry won the best coach accolade for leading his side to the title.
