Garrycastle 1-9 Mullingar Shamrocks 0-9
Garrycastle staged a fine second half comeback, to record an historic three-in-a-row of Westmeath Senior Football Championship victories, when edging out Mullingar Shamrocks in a replay at Cusack Park on Sunday.
The winners were three behind at the break(1-3 to 0-9), but managed to hit six points without reply after the restart. County star Dessie Dolan led the way, ably assisted by Doran Harte and Seanie O’Donoghue. The victory sees the Westmeath club qualify for a Leinster club championship first round meeting with Longford Slashers on November 13.
Shamrocks were fastest off the blocks in this game and early scores from Michael Curley and Simon Quinn gave them the advantage. James Duignan then scored the only goal of the match to bring Garycastle right back into contention. Dessie Dolan increased the champions’ lead and then swapped points with Shamrocks goalkeeper Philip Shaw, who knocked over a ’45.
Mullingar stepped up a gear after, and scored the last three points of the half, to leave them three in front at the interval. However, Garycastle were a different side in the second period and came out with all guns blazing.
Doran Harte raced forward from centreback to score a point and Dessie Dolan brought the sides level in the 46th minute. The latter then kicked a free over the bar to give his side the lead. Indiscipline set in for Mullingar, and Dolan added another late free, before Seanie O’Donoghue scored the final point of the afternoon to give his side a deserved three points victory.
