Ballintubber 1-10 Castlebar Mitchels 1-9
Ballintubber defeated Castlebar Mitchels for the second year in succession to claim the Mayo senior football championship, at McHale Park on Sunday afternoon. There was only a single point between the sides, in what was a tight and exciting contest.
Right from the very first minute this game was set to be a rip roaring contest, and Danny Kirby’s goal right from the throw-in gave Castlebar an early advantage. The underdogs were playing the better football in the first quarter and should have been further ahead, if they had luck on their side. However, a deflected goal from Cillian O’Connor brought Ballintubber to within a point of the lead, and soon after they kicked late points to leave them one ahead at the interval.
Castlebar drew level after the restart before points from Alan Plunkett and Gary Dillon put Ballintubber two in front again. Kevin Filan kicked over two fine frees to level the mach once more. Cillian O’Connor hit two points for his side but Danny Kirby and Kevin Filan replied to leave the teams level with five minutes to play. Substitute Damien McGing was the unlikely hero for Ballintubber, kicking over a last minute score to leave the defending champions a point to the good.
The winners will now go forward to the Connacht club championship where they’ll face the Galway club champions in the provincial semi-final.
