Roddy Collins’ Monaghan United team took a massive step towards earning promotion to the premier division with a 2-0 first-leg win over Galway United tonight in the Airtricity League promotion/relegation play-off.

The first division hopefuls were the better side from the off and deservedly took the lead after 13 minutes through midfielder Michael Isichei, the Galway defence allowing Monaghan the time and space in the penalty area to deliver a perfect cross for Isichei to slot home.

Galway substitute Sean Gavin and Monaghan midfielder Eric Foley miss the return leg as both were sent off following an off the ball clash on 81 minutes.

Sean Brennan then doubled his team’s lead shortly afterwards, keeping his cool to knock the ball in from a tight angle.

The return leg is set for Galway’s Terryland Park this Friday.

Monaghan United: Gabriel Sava; Paul Whelan, Aidan Collins, Alan Byrne, Shane Grimes; Michael Isichei (Paul Byrne 64, William McDonagh 85), Eric Foley, Ryan Brennan, Jordan Keegan (Jason Marks 88); Declan O’Brien, Sean Brennan

Galway United: Conor Winn; Paul Sinnott, Yob Som, Laurence Gaughan, Gary Kelly; Jin Gu Kim (Sean Gavin HT), Bobby Ryan, Alan Murphy, Oscar Sibanda (Eduardo Silvera 76); Mikey Gilmour, Ronan Cauldwell (Steven Walsh 89)
