Galway United 1-3 Monaghan United
Monaghan United will be back playing Premier Division football next season, after a ten year absence. The Mons Defeated Galway United 3-1 in their play-off/relegation battle at Terryland Park this evening, resulting in a 5-1 aggregate win.
A first-half brace from Declan “Fabio” O’Brien and a 51st minute goal from Ryan Brennan had the result beyond doubt just after half-time, on a night when even the presence of president-elect Michael D. Higgins in the crowd couldn’t help the home side as Roddy Collins and his men eased to promotion.
Alan Murphy scored Galway’s consolation goal eight minutes from time, to round off a disappointing season’s campaign all round for the Tribesmen.
So it is Galway United who tonight face the reality of relegation, while Monaghan are celebrating an historic moment for their club.
