Joseph O’Brien got off to the perfect start at the Breeders’ Cup after winning on his first ride aboard St Nicholas Abbey.

The 18 year old O’Brien held up St Nicholas Abbey second last before going for it at the home bend to easily land the race by two lengths.

What made the victory so special was that the horse was trained by his father Aidan at Ballydoyle in County Tipperary.

Sea Moon, trained by Sir Michael Stoute and ridden by Ryan Moore, was second with Brilliant Speed staying on gamely for third.

Champion French filly Sarafina was not travelling form a long way out and finished well down the field.
