Leon Best’s participation in the upcoming play-offs with Estonia looks increasingly unlikely as the Ireland camp confirmed they would not know the extent of his groin injury until tomorrow.

Initial reports from the Newcastle medical team suggested it was doubtful Best would recover in time for Friday’s game.

Best was called up to the squad last Thursday due to confirmation that Shane Long would not recover from his knee injury in time, but the striker limped off in the second half of Saturday’s 2-1 win over Everton.

In other injury news it was confirmed that John O’Shea will miss out on the play-offs after failing to recover from a hamstring injury that has plagued his season.

Liam Lawrence was also ruled out of the games earlier today due to an ankle injury and returned to Portsmouth for further treatment.
