Derry’s triathlon star, Aileen Morrison has been named winner of ‘Sportswoman of the Month’ for the month of October.
This follows an aggressive start to the triathlon season where Morrison secured two medals; gold in the European Cup in Antalya, Turkey and silver in the World Cup in Ishigaki, Japan.
Morrison, a member of the Senior High Performance Squad, has emerged internationally asone of Ireland’s most exciting London 2012 Olympics prospects in Triathlon and has also been awarded an Olympic Solidarity award for London 2012.
Morrison’s success lies in victories such as her 5th place at the Waterways Ireland ITU European Championships in Athlone, which was the best result ever by an Irish triathlete. In the World Championship Series in Hamburg, Morrison won a bronze medal which was the greatest achievement by an Irish triathlete in the sport to date.
Morrison describes the training as intensive and not without its sacrifices “It’s such a ridiculous sport, really, six or seven hours a day of swimming, cycling and running and then the sacrifices. I‘ve almost entirely given up tea. I would have ten cups a day. I just love tea and a bun.”
