Cavan Boxing Club take 3 Golds in Sweden

Updated: November 11, 2011

Congratulations to Coach Brian McKeown and his Cavan Boxing Club team who enjoyed great success at the Angered Centrum Box Cup in Gothenburg last weekend (4th-6th). reports that the Breffni club took home 3 gold and 3 silver medals from their 6 entrants and were just pipped by a single point for best club with the winning team having an entry of 13 boxers .

With some 420 fights over the three days, four rings were often in action simultaneously to enable the organisers to complete the tournament as scheduled. The Angered Club in the suburbs of Gothenburg was founded in December 1983 by Arne Lengstrand, Tommy Andersson and Leif Nordman .

More good news for Irish fans was that there were also golds for Shauna Flynn from the Inniskeen club, and Laoise Traynor from Bray and a silver for Dervla Duffy from Ryston, who travelled with the Cavan team but were entered as members of their own clubs and their points did not count in the team competition.

In the Elite Open 51 kilo class, Cavan’s Ceire Smith boxed superbly over the 3 days to take gold win wins over Linda Scardin, Frida Stenholm and Amie Ramstead and never conceded a single round despite carrying an arm injury in the final 2 bouts. Smith in fact represented Ireland at the 2010World championships in Barbados and again at the recent European Championships in Rotterdam and is improving all the time and one to watch for the future. The win over Stenholm was particularly praiseworthy as she is one of Sweden’s leading prospects for the future.

Also in the Elite Open class, Dervla Duffy was outstanding only lose out for gold by a decision that ‘incensed fans and officials alike’ but she had the consolation of being awarded best boxer of the event. Dervla defeated a good Soviet boxer based in Sweden and the champion of Norway on route to the final.Indeed the Ryston fighter is doing well at International tournaments whenever she has the opportunity as she has also won the Haringey Box Cup in London for the past two years.

There were golds also for Cavan juniors Oliwia Samsonow and Daria Lach, from the Loreto College, while Michelle Jannick went down on a majority in the Elite B class at 51 kilo with all having to fight twice for medals. Jannick has been very busy in the ring of late having only the previous week won the Irish Under 21 title at 51kg defeating Crumlin’s Jade Corcoran in the process.

Silvers also went to Steven Flynn at Elite B 75 kilo and Jonathan Mongan in the junior 54 class so all in all a great weekend for the Cavan team and indeed for all the Irish competitors.
