Arsenal are ready to spring a surprise bid for Manchester City midfielder Nigel de Jong.
The Dutch international has struggled to keep his place in the City line up following injury and the arrival of Samir Nasri but the Gunners are reportedly lining up a move for the tough tackling midfielder. Newspaper reports suggest he is unhappy at the way he has been treated at the Ethiad Stadium after being a regular feature during City’s successful season last year and news that the FA Cup holders are not set to re-negotiate his £50,000 a week wages.
He is believed to want to leave Eastlands and Arsenal are interested following the injuries to Jack Wilshere and Abou Diaby. The 26 year old moved to England from Hamburg in 2009 for £18 million and became an instant hit with his committed tackles and his work rate but a lack of first team opportunities this season could signal the end to his City career. He is also believed to want a pay increase after seeing the likes of Nasri and Yaya Toure earning £200,000 a week.
Arsenal will face stiff competition for the Dutch international after Real Madrid scouts were seen watching de Jong during City’s recent Champions League game with Villarreal. It is thought that Madrid will bid a massive £20 million for him which surely Arsenal won’t even think about matching.
